PiTiVi Video Editor - A Look

I wanted to try a Linux based video editor for editing video files which would do both video editing, converting and video compression using various encoding schemes. I had a hands on with ffmpeg command line video compression and conversion tool. I felt it was impressive.

I am not a very much versed in video editing. I needed a tool that would help me do the basic stuff without much fuss. Fortunately, I found PiTiVi as just the right tool I needed.

PiTiVi is a free, intuitive and featureful movie editor for the Linux desktop.

PiTiVi has a intuitive and simpler video drag and drop feature for editing. The video to be edited can be dragged and dropped from the Clip Library section to the Video Timeline portion of the main UI. The video can be expanded in the timeline zone to see the individual clips of the video.

PiTiVi supports simple media editing capabilities such as trimming, snapping, splitting and cutting of clips.

PiTiVi inherits its capabilities for importing and exporting (rendering) media from the GStreamer framework, or plugins for the GStreamer framework.

Issues faced while using PiTiVi:

  • PiTiVi did not render the video that I had placed for editing. I searched related forums and figured out its dependency in GStreamer plugins. The error during rendering was something like "GStreamer not linking..". Using the Ubuntu Software Center, I searched for all GStreamer plugins and installed whatever looked relevant. I guessed, I missed a GStreamer plug-in which rendered avi files. After that the rendering kick started.
  • The rendering time took about 30 minutes for videos of varying length. The video editing seemed to make the system slow in response
